ISSUE/PROBLEM:
How do I back up my entire system on the IBM RS/6000 for AIX Version 4.1?
SOLUTION:
This information is discussed in the AIX Version 4.1 Systems Management Guide:
Operating System and Devices in Chaper 8. This memo is intended as a summary
of the steps required.
Step 1) Have the required number of tapes available. In using 1/4" tape
cartridges five tapes should be available, if using 8mm tapes one
tape should be enough.
Step 2) Have all users logoff the system.
Step 3) Insert the first blank tape into the tape drive.
Step 4) Logon as root.
Then type smit mksysb and press enter.
Step 5) At the Backup DEVICE or File field type the device name of your
tape drive, usually /dev/rmt0 or /dev/rmt1 . If you are not sure as
to the correct device to enter, press F4 to obtain a list of valid tape
devices.
Use the Tab key to move from field to field.
Set Create MAP Files to no.
EXCLUDE files to no.
Make BOOTABLE backup to yes. [This is IMPORTANT.]
EXPAND /tmp if needed to yes.
Number of BLOCKS to write in a single output [] (leave blank)
Press Enter.
Step 6) During the Bcakup process, the system will prompt you to insert the
next tape when required. If a message appears to mount the next
tape, remove the tape and label it, include the date and tape number
(ie. tape 1 or tape 2, etc.) on the label. Now insert the next tape and
press Enter.
Step 7) When the Backup is complete, the COMMAND field at the top of
the screen changes to OK. Press F10 to exit.
