ISSUE/PROBLEM:

How do I back up my entire system on the IBM RS/6000?

SOLUTION:

This information is discussed in the AIX Installation Guide
in Chapter 15. This memo is intended as a summary of the
     steps required.

Step 1) Have the required number of tapes available. In
using 1/4" tape cartridges five tapes should be
available, if using 8mm tapes one tape should be enough.

Step 2) Have all users logoff the system.

Step 3) Determine the device name of your tape drive.
               Usually its /dev/rmt0 or /dev/rmt1 -
if unsure type smit lsdtpe, the device name should appear
               on the screen.

Step 4) Log on as ROOT and type smit startup and press enter.

Step 5) Backup the System should be highlighted. Press Enter
               to select it.

Step 6) Insert the first blank tape into the tape drive.

Step 7) Force increase work space is needed is highlighted. Press
the Tab key to change the default from no to yes.

Step 8) Move the cursor to Backup Device or File.
Type /dev/rmt0.1 or /dev/rmt1.1 as determined in
step 3. Press the Enter key.

Step 9) During the Bcakup process, the system will prompt you
to insert the next tape when required. If a message
appears to mount the next tape, remove the tape and
label it, include the date and tape number
(ie. tape 1 or tape 2, etc.) on the label. Now insert
the next tape and press Enter.

Step 10) When the Backup is complete, the COMMAND field at
the top of the screen changes to OK. Press F10 to exit.
